AI Readiness for SMEs: Five Questions Before You Invest
Enthusiasm for AI tends to outrun the groundwork needed to use it well. Before committing budget to a pilot or a vendor, it's worth answering five questions honestly — most of the value at this stage comes from what the exercise rules out, not what it approves.
1. Is the problem well-defined, or just "we should be doing AI"?
"Use AI somewhere in the business" is not a use case. "Reduce the time our team spends manually matching invoices to purchase orders" is. Specific, bounded problems are far more likely to produce a usable result than open-ended exploration.
2. Is the underlying data actually usable?
AI initiatives are frequently blocked not by model quality but by data that's inconsistent, siloed across systems, or simply not captured in the first place. An honest data audit before committing budget saves far more than it costs.
3. Who owns the outcome if it goes wrong?
Governance sounds like a later-stage concern, but for anything touching customer data, financial decisions, or regulated processes, ownership, approval controls and human oversight need to be designed in from the start — not bolted on after an incident.
4. Does the team have the skills to operate it, not just launch it?
A pilot that works in a demo but has no one able to maintain, monitor or improve it afterward is a sunk cost with extra steps. Readiness includes the people who'll own the tool once the vendor or consultant has left.
5. What does success actually look like, in a number?
"It should help" is not a success metric. Time saved, error rate reduced, cycle time shortened — pick the number before the pilot starts, not after.
