Desk-Based vs Field-Based Feasibility Studies: What UAE Businesses Need to Know

Valusage Advisory Team5 min read

"Feasibility study" covers a wide range of work, from a two-week desk exercise to a multi-month programme involving customer surveys and site visits. Before commissioning one, it's worth understanding which type actually answers the question you're asking — because the two approaches have very different cost, timeline and evidence profiles.

What a desk-based study can tell you

A desk-based feasibility study builds its market, operating and financial assumptions from published data, industry benchmarks, competitor analysis and structured interviews with your own management team. It's fast to commission, doesn't require field permissions, and is usually sufficient to answer a go, revise, or stop question at the concept or early-planning stage.

What it can't do is validate demand directly with end customers who don't yet know your business exists. If your biggest open question is "will people actually pay for this," desk research narrows the range of the answer — it doesn't close it.

What a field-based study adds — and its cost

Field-based work — customer surveys, intercept interviews, site traffic studies — can materially sharpen demand estimates, but in the UAE it requires competent-authority approval before it can be conducted, and that approval process adds both time and a separate, scoped-out cost.

In practice, most SME and expansion-stage decisions are well served by a rigorous desk-based study, with field work reserved for high-capital decisions where the cost of being wrong justifies the additional time and expense.

A simple way to decide

Ask what the study needs to change your mind about. If it's market sizing, cost structure, funding requirements or competitive positioning, desk research is usually the right tool. If it's genuinely untested willingness to pay for a novel product in a specific location, that's the case for considering field work — with authority approval secured first.

Where Valusage fits

Our Pre-Feasibility Review, Financial Feasibility Model and Full Desk-Based Feasibility Study services are all desk-based by design — market context, operating plan, financial modelling, scenarios and risk, built from available data and your own team's input. Field surveys sit outside this scope and require separate authority approval; we can flag when a decision genuinely calls for them.
